FRCC To Hold Open Council Meeting To Receive the 1996 Groundfish Stock Status Report

Ottawa - The Fisheries Resource Conservation Council (FRCC) will hold an open Council meeting on June 27 in Montreal, Quebec, to receive the 1996 Groundfish Stock Status Report from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO).

The Council meeting will be open to the public and will take place at the Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza, 420 Sherbrooke Street West, in the Salon Snateur from 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. DFO scientists will present assessments of Atlantic groundfish stocks in the first hour and a half, and will then answer questions about the report. This process will foster discussion among FRCC members, scientists, industry stakeholders, fishers, and the general public.

The FRCC will consult with stakeholders in early September on the DFO Science findings and will then prepare its annual report to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans on the 1997 conservation requirements for Atlantic groundfish.

The Council, created in 1993, is a partnership between scientific and academic expertise and all sectors of the fishing industry. Together, members make public recommendations to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans on issues such as total allowable catches (TACs) and on other conservation measures for the Atlantic fishery. The Council also provides advice in the areas of scientific research and assessment priorities.
