LETTER TO STAKEHOLDERS

March 1, 2021

Letter to Stakeholders:

Between March 13 and March 16, the Fisheries Resource Conservation Council (FRCC) will gather information from stakeholders on Gulf of St. Lawrence groundfish stocks. This will assist the FRCC in making recommendations to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans on groundfish conservation requirements for 2000/2001 for the following stocks:

Cod (4TVn and 3Pn4RS)

Greenland halibut (4RS)

Atlantic halibut (4RST)

American plaice (4T)

Witch flounder (4RST)

Winter flounder (4T)

Yellowtail flounder (4T)

White hake (4T)

The FRCC will review DFO’s assessments and the results of the sentinel surveys. The Council will also consult with interested stakeholders in the following locations:

March 13 Gasp, QC (Quality Inn)
Port-au-Choix, NF (Town Council Office)
March 14 Port-aux-Basques, NF (St. Christopher's Hotel) 10:00 am
March 15 Moncton, NB (Crystal Palace)
Blanc Sablon, QC (Centre Communautaire, Hotel de ville) 11:00 am
March 16 Port Hawkesbury, NS (Nautical College)

Meetings will begin at 9:00 am except as otherwise indicated.

All stakeholders’ comments regarding groundfish conservation are welcome; however, the FRCC asks that you concentrate on the attached questions that will be used to focus our discussions. These questions are available on our website. The Council intends to start a process to develop strategic objectives for each stock and for the ecosystem as a whole. Even if yearly recommendations are placed in the broad perspective of stocks’ recovery, the FRCC wants to make more explicit what is expected from particular stocks, taking into account not only the fishing activities but also the general environment where those activities take place. There is no doubt that your participation in that process is very important for the Council.

The success of these consultations is of interest to all stakeholders in the fishery. Your views are important and we hope you will participate fully.
