Letter to Stakeholders:

The Fisheries Resource Conservation Council (FRCC) will hold public consultations this fall to gather information on groundfish stocks in Sub-Areas 0, 2 +3 and redfish stocks. This information will assist the Council in making recommendations to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans for conservation requirements for 2003/2004.

The meetings will be held in the following locations:

Scientists from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans will provide new scientific advice on the following stocks:

COD 3Ps                 AMERICAN PLAICE 3Ps       WITCH FLOUNDER 3Ps
POLLOCK 3Ps      LUMPFISH

During these meetings, the FRCC will seek the views of stakeholders regarding all of the stocks in Sub-Areas 0, 2+3 in preparation for the provision of advice to the Minister in January 2003.

The FRCC’s mandate also includes the provision of advice to the Minister on DFO science research programs and recommendations on priorities, objectives and resource requirements. Accordingly, the views of stakeholders will also be sought on priorities for science during these meetings.

Stakeholders primarily interested in redfish in units 1,2,3 and 3O should note that while these meetings will elicit comments on redfish stocks, a meeting at 1:00 pm on November 20 in Halifax at the Holiday Inn, Kearney Lake Road, will focus on redfish.

Stakeholders are welcome to make public presentations at the meetings or to provide a written brief to the FRCC at P.O. Box 2001, Station D, Ottawa, ON K1P 5W3, phone (613) 998-0433, fax (613) 998-1146, internet http://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/frcc.

We look forward to hearing your views and hope you will participate fully.
